Helping Children Deal with Divorce

Posted on 01.27.25

Divorce is never easy for a couple, but it is especially easy when children are involved. It is very difficult to explain why mommy and daddy will no longer be living together and that the family life that they have known is over. Many children internalize this feeling and wonder if they are the reason why their parents are splitting up. It is important, then, for parents to pay close attention to their children and help them through this difficult transition.

The first thing to do is reassure the children that each parent will still play a major role in the child’s life. Children are often confused about what exactly a divorce means and they think that one parent will be gone forever. It is important to explain that this is not the case, that each parent still loves the children and that each parent will still be there for them.

It is also important for parents not to bad mouth one another in front of the children. Speaking ill of the other parent to the kids in an awkward position and may build resentment. No matter how badly you may be hurt by this divorce, don’t bad mouth the other parent to the child. Similarly, when spending time with the children, make sure they are having fun and that the time is positive. This time with the non-custodial parent is very important to the children so make sure that it is very special to you, too.

If the child seems to be having an especially difficult time with this transition, seek the help of support groups or professionals. Divorce is common so it may be helpful for the children to learn that they are no alone. By meeting other children who have been through this transition and speaking with therapists who can help with coping mechanisms, the child can come to terms with this new reality.
