Look Past the Emotions in Your Florida Divorce

Posted on 01.27.25

Divorce is, by nature, an emotional process. After all, it represents the undoing of something which was done as the result of the feelings that two people had for one another. There is also a more rational side to divorce, and you can use it to understand what your options are in your Florida divorce. The rational element of divorce is math, and it plays a role in everything from property settlements to parenting time, and everything in between.

When people get divorced, they have ideas about what they would like to accomplish in doing so. These ideas can be associated with numbers. For example, you may have an idea about what your ideal percentage of parenting time would be. You might think about which items of personal property you would most like to have, and you will need to know the value of those items in order to determine how many of them could fit into a fair distribution of the overall value of the marital estate. If you look at these types of numbers, you can come up with many creative ways to distribute those things which will be divided up in your divorce.

It can be difficult to get past the emotions and see the numbers in your divorce for what they really mean. You may have a strong attachment to your marital home, but if buying out your spouse’s share of its value would put you in a perilous financial position; it may not be worth it in the long run. Instead, it might be better if you sell the house and each of you walks away with a portion of the proceeds that you can use for whatever you choose as you move forward. There are many different ways in which couples have decided to dispose of or divide their homes, and looking at the numbers for the options which are available in your case can help you to evaluate those options and decide which is best for you.

When you look at your Florida divorce in terms of the numbers, you can get a feel for how a proposed settlement will affect your life both now and in the future. It can be difficult to reconcile the numbers that you see with what you feel that you want. However, it is less difficult to do that than it is to get out from under the consequences of accepting a proposed property settlement or parenting agreement that does not serve your best interests.
