How to handle a mid-life divorce in Florida

Posted on 01.27.25

While going through a divorce is a challenge at any age, it presents special circumstances for couples who have reached their midlife.  One reason is that midlife couples are often more financially stable and have more complex assets.  Another reason is that children are more likely to be involved. Yet another reason is that midlife couples are more likely to have sustained and become entrenched in the standard of living in the marriage for many years.

In light of the more complex nature of midlife divorce, divorcing midlife Florida couples may find the process straining and emotionally draining.  Fortunately, experts offer some advice to help ease the process of midlife divorce, including:

  • Obtain legal representation – Having an attorney who is very knowledgeable and experienced about the various legal issues in a divorce may help reduce the amount of drama and stress by focusing your attention on specific goals and issues.
  • Do not involve your children – Even children who are teenagers or young adults can feel the effects of divorcing parents. While it is easy to build a friendship and personal closeness with older children, experts recommend avoiding the temptation to involve them in divorce matters. Regardless of your close relationship, children should not be subject to drama, trash talk, or emotional issues between you and your spouse.
  • Do not involve social media – Today’s technology is often a very real component of divorce. Social media sites like Facebook are common grounds of ammunition for divorcing couples, and should be avoided at all costs. Midlife couples are not exempt from the drama that can abound on social media sites, including between family members and close friends.
  • Limit family and friend involvement – As mentioned above in regards to social media, even family and friends can become too involved in the difficult emotional roller-coaster that is divorce.  Limit how much you tell your family and friends, and be careful not to speak ill of your spouse through the process.  Keep them on your side and go to them for support, but leave out the juicy details.
  • Remember that Divorce is uncomfortable – Divorce is one of the most uncomfortable subjects for people to discuss. Some people feel that divorce is vehemently wrong, and others are unsure of how you feel about it and therefore, do not mention it. Whether you are attending a family event, office party, or are just having lunch with your best friends, remember that healing takes time for everyone involved.
  • Patience is a virtue – The divorce process can be lengthy and emotionally draining. Remember to be patient with everyone involved, including yourself as the process moves forward and after the divorce is final. Give yourself, your ex-spouse, and those around you time to work through the changes and adjust to post-divorce life. Exuding patience can help the process be less stressful, and can ensure a calmer, more successful resolution.
